What is ectropion?

Ectropion is a medical term denoting out-rolling of the eyelid margin. Why it happens? The main cause of ectropion is an age induced laxitiy of eyelid tissues, although in some cases it may happen after some kinds of skin disorders. Clinical symptoms In this eyelid disorder the eye surface is exposed to air and hence dryness of ocular surface happen. The patient feels discomfort and itching and burning of eyes. Also, the patient may experience tears running out of the eyes. Treatment This condition needs to be corrected by surgery. Lubricating drops and ointments may help. Surgery could be performed by local anesthesia and may take more than 45 minutes. In some patients other reconstructive operations may be required. Precautions Patients should hold all medications that can increase the chance of pre- and post-operative bleeding, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, warfarin, 2 weeks before surgery.
